How to Choose the Canadian Sphinx Kitten

Little sphinxes are demanding and gentle children. In order for the sphinx kitten to grow up healthy and its development to be complete, the baby’s diet must be varied and balanced: professional feeds are only Super Premium class, special vitamins and additives, canned food for kittens, it is advisable to feed raw frozen meat, chicken, baby food. It is very important that kittens can communicate with a person as often as possible, starting from the very first days of life, because this is a guarantee that babies will grow up affectionate, sociable and person-oriented. Left to itself, the little sphinx, devoid of human attention and affection, like an abandoned child, can grow up closed and unsociable, with various disturbances in behavior and psyche.

When you come to choose the Canadian sphinx, be sure to pay attention to the kitten’s behavior: stroke it and see how the baby answers – purrs, bends its back with pleasure, fins, plays with you – this is how the “correct” sphynx should behave.

In no case should a kitten show any signs of aggression – hiss, keep clear of you and try to hide, release its claws.

Good breeders castrate / sterilize their kittens in advance, before the kids get into a new home, but this does not mean that the kittens are of poor quality and especially some defects. The acquisition of producers of valuable blood lines is a very troublesome and expensive business, a stable show-type of animals in the nursery is formed over the years thanks to a clearly arranged breeding program of the breeder, and it is natural that the breeder seeks to protect good blood lines from “breeding” and “longing for easy money” buyers . If you really buy a sphinx for the soul, then taking an already castrated baby is more profitable, so you will avoid the “surprises” of puberty of an adult animal and the need to do this operation in the future. Many years of experience have been accumulated in Europe and the USA, indicating that early castration / sterilization does not have any negative effect on the development of animals; however, at an early age, kittens are easier to tolerate anesthesia and the operation itself, the healing process is faster.

Watch out if the breeder is not interested in who you are, for what purpose you are buying a sphinx kitten, in what conditions he will live; if the breeder is ready to sell you a non-neutered kitten with all the documents without asking unnecessary questions. Kittens raised with love and by all rules are always full-fledged members of the family and beloved toddlers, so a good breeder is ALWAYS interested in what conditions the kitten will live and takes part in its future fate. Pay attention to the number of animals living in the apartment (house) at the same time, crowding is dangerous by the occurrence and constant relapses of viral and infectious diseases.

Never pick up a kitten before 3 months of age. Mom cat feeds kittens for 1.5-2 months, she also teaches them the basics of behavior: how to eat food and lap up water, lick, use a tray, communicate with each other. Kittens that have been growing in a “family” for at least 3 months have a more stable psyche, they are better adapted to the environment, easier to adapt in a new house. In addition, the last vaccinations end by about 2.5 months of age. After the last vaccination, a small quarantine should take place in 1-2 weeks, so that the breeder can make sure that the vaccination has “gone” well and that there are no negative consequences for the kitten.

There is a legend among buyers that the older the kitten, the more difficult it is to get used to the new owners. However, this opinion is not true. All the features of behavior and adaptation are associated not with the age of the kitten, but with its individual temperament, which even with the years the Canadian sphynxes practically does not change.

Many buyers have a question how to distinguish purebred elite producers from the average bald “murziks”. The main indicator is the marks at the shows and the obtained titles of the parents of kittens. However, be careful! For comparison, in such felinological systems as Assolux, WCA, WCF, an animal scores automatically, simply by participating in the exhibition, respectively, to receive the title of Grand Champion, for example, any cat can at least minimally meet the breed standard. The most rigorous and valuable refereeing takes place in the rings of the American TICA system (TIKA), where even to obtain the simplest title “Champion” the animal must be in the top ten among all short-haired breeds according to the judging results.

jonik.jpg The main thing you should pay attention to when buying a Canadian sphinx is the head: it should not be narrow and (or) long, the cheekbones should also be wide and rounded, and the pinch should be full and well-defined – the so-called “relief “Head. The ears are large and wide at the base, well open.
